Gossip Girl Redux

Serena van der Woodsen must be the stupidest socialite ever. Seriously - going to Nate to tell him he's going to have an affair with Trip because her heart "thumps" everytime she sees him.

Dan, Olivia and Vanessa - in a 3-some. Yeah Dan, don't you know the third person is always a stranger?! Maybe Hillary Duff wil lbe off the show after this - I really hope so.

Excuse me while I go puke as Nate professes his "love" for Serena. And Trip doesn't really have any room to be pissed off.

Of course it was going to be a Dan and Vanessa romance. Two of the most insipid characters end up together.

And Dan and Olivia's stupid drama is taking away from Lady Gaga's performance. Ugh.

TV round up for the week

Quick rundown on some of my favourite scenes in some of the mindless TV I watch -

Grey's Anatomy - hmmm, the show's not doing it for me this season. Nothing really memorable about this episode - well except that Izzie was back, and no, that's not a good thing. Oh yes, Hunt's "gift" to Cristina was interesting.

They cancelled The Doll House. Just when it was getting interesting.

If there is one more Law and Order episode based on drugs and mafia killings - ugh. Nothing really interesting in the detective work or the law there. And they're still going on with their sexist streak. The innuendoes regarding a stupid affair that took place years ago. Looks like Connie's not going to be with us long. Maybe they can replace her with another male and complete their white boys' club.

Justin accepting his homecoming queen crown had me tearing up. And him saying "I'm not gay." I wonder how long it'll be before someone coming out to his/herself is not so tormenting that they have to lie about who they are, even to themselves and coming out stories aren't the after-school special storylines that "Just say no" was in the 80s.

Kalinda Sharma on The Good Wife really kicks ass. I want to be her when I grow up.

The Big Bang Theory - Howard's and Raj's fight in the comic book store was hilarious. Those two are overshadowed by Sheldon, who (rightfully) steals the limelight most episodes.

I never thought I'd find a character on Gossip Girl more insipid than Vanessa. Or Serena. But Olivia, played by Lizzie Maguire just took the cake. Seriously, Duff needs to take acting lessons because it's hard to believe her as anything besides Lizzie. Her stint on Law and Order was good, but only because the character was so far opposite to squeaky clean Lizzie that you overlooked the bad acting.

Didn't quite get what was going on with Cuddy and the detective on House. Is he just the manny? Manny with benefits? In a serious relationship with Cuddy?

V - I need to pay more attention when I watch this show. But so far - let's see - they need to move it along faster.

SVU was Elliott's very special episode. Eh.

Nora on Brothers and Sisters annoys me. But I liked her whole "he's completely in love with me" schpiel at the wine festival. And Rebecca - I know she's freaked out. But can she not just hang on for a couple of days tille Justin's midterm is over? It's not the end of the world, jeez. And the wine that spilled in the cellar - if that's all there was of it, I don't know how they expected to turn the company around. That didn't look like very much.

And Angie is quickly replacing Gabbie as my number 2 Desperate Housewife. Lanette's still got her spot secure as number one.

Scarf progress

The first scarf is a little more than halfway done. Simple pattern makes for easy knitting while watching TV. Don't have pictures right now, but will soon.

In the meantime - I've nearly caught up on TV viewing. With one episode each of Project Runway, Law and Order and Ugly Betty to go, I should be all caught up by the end of the day today. If not, sometime tomorrow - and then it starts all over again.

Speaking of TV, how great was this week's Glee episode? There have been complaints that some of the story-lines are unbelievable - especially the pregnancy story line. God knows there have been a million blogposts around the intarwebs cribbing about this. But seriously, Glee is about the music. And about Kurt's coming out story - at least for me. Oh - and Sue Sylvester. The rest of the show does it's job well - entertain and prop up the music.

So - leaving you with Chris Colfer's (Kurt's) rendition of Defying Gravity - the version where he doesn't flub the high F.

Knitting's counterpart.

The reason this blog is called Knit and Watch is because while I knit, I watch TV. Or rather while I watch TV, I knit. I'll admit - I'm a TV addict. And I've learned to embrace this sickness.

I'll also admit that more than 50% of my TV viewing is non-intellectual, suspend-all-reality, I-can't-believe-I'm-watching this-but-I-will-continue-to-do-so crap. And I've an average of 4 hours of programming that I have to watch nearly every day of the week. Thank god for PVR - if it weren't for this wonderful piece of technology, I'd have no social life, choosing instead to catch up with my shows. (I'd sing TiVo's praises instead, but unfortunately in Canada, we don't have this, just like we don't have the Kindle, and it took us forever to get the iPhone, but I'm not bitter).

Of course, knitting something while I'm watching TV justifies the time I spend in front of the idiot-box. And when I'm watching something worth watching, it justifies why I'm knitting. One addiction feeds the other, I guess.

Obligatory Introductory Post

The first time I picked up a pair of knitting needles was in fifth grade. My school had a compulsory "crafts" class - which started off as paper-origami in grades one and two, then proceeded to sewing for the girls in grades three and four and knitting and crochet from grades five to nine. I guess the aim was to teach girls skills they could use - you know, like make your own scarves and baby-booties and save some money, or something. Of course, now given the price of yarn, a scarf could cost you $50 in materials alone, which is pretty steep when you think you could get a similar piece for a quarter of the cost.

The first "scarf" I made was about 12 inches long. I got a D for it. My class teacher was disappointed - I remember her saying something about how my perfect "A" report card was ruined with the D. I remember me rolling my eyes. I was an academic. I was not creative and crafty. I liked math and science and while the social sciences weren't my favourite subjects, I could still wrap my head around them. Which was more than I could say about wrapping yarn around my pinky trying to create the perfect tension to knit the perfect (12 inch) scarf.

After school I didn't touch knitting needles till I moved out and was in my first serious relationship. I got it into my head to knit my then-boyfriend a sweater. Obviously, I hadn't heard about the Sweater Curse. (Let's just say I didn't disprove that one!). Sometimes I think I took up knitting again to justify the endless hours of TV-watching that had become a norm for me as a car-less person in Columbus, Ohio. Anyways, this attempt at knitting was a relative success, the sweater was wearable and the flaws not too obvious.

But knitting still remained a "passion" that I pulled out when there were lulls in my social life. And for when my TV line up threatened to keep me captive at home for days. Over the years I've knit sweaters, socks, and hats. Oh - and baby booties. I still haven't managed to finish knitting a complete wearable scarf though.

Now with the Fall TV line-up holding me hostage on my couch, I've dusted up the old knitting needles and resolved to knit up a few items this season. I've also resolved that the items I make will be as close to perfect as possible. No more ignoring the mis-stitch, that admittedly no one would notice, but I know it's there. No more wearing knit items that have not been blocked to bring out the garment's best. No more ignoring guages. More importantly, no more half-finished items.

This is an exercise in learning to finish something I've started. And learning to do it well. Even if it's only a scarf in broken-rib. If this is successful, this will be my first scarf ever. And for someone who's knit on and off over the past years, that will be quite an accomplishment.
